artifacts

It's understood that the "Tasmanian Sojourn" ideally would highlight the Tasmanian region however provided the artifacts found within our accession, it involves a range of items from many different countries.  We agree to include a note within the exhibit that expresses that the artifacts were left to our own interpretation and some were left more information than others.  The focus of the artifacts represented are from the Pacific islands.

  1. This all looks good (with the exception of the fly whisks and the lyrebird feathers which CM claimed about a week and a half ago). I think the crumbling tapa cloth was going to line the bottom of one case for CM but I imagine they'd give it up if necessary. I suspect the fabulous men's skirt (one of my favorite in the entire collection--the one with bird feathers and the really graphic swatches that matches those worn by the Indigenous cricket team members in the photo you have posted here) along with fan, the sash, the mat, and so forth will be way more than enough. See my comment on Airielle's blog about the three daggers--those aren't from the South Pacific. Do we know more about that snake dagger knife? I think that needs to stay as a generic piece (maybe over in FC; it just doesn't strike me as S Pacific either).

  2. Oops--the Puffin Beak rattle won't fit either. Clearly aqcuired between 1903 and 1907 when he was consulting in British Columbia and headquartered back in Oakland.

  3. Understood, Thanks. Better to slim it down than not have enough! (I was sure the lyrebird feathers were claimed but thought I'd take a chance anyhow)
